hairspray is really upbeat and retro, and wicked is like the real life of the WWOTW. you get really into wicked, like your one of the characters, and in hairspray its just something fun to watch. with that bieng said, if you really liked rent, which is like you get in the motion, and disliked Chicago which is more of watch it and be laughing, then i would go for Wicked. Plus Wicked Rocks. Hairspray i didnt like.

Both shows are pretty easy to understand, have fluffy music, and both are an enjoyable night out. Why don't you listen to some of the music and see which you enjoy.
I recommend that you see Wicked since the movie of Hairspray is coming out this summer. People either love or hate Wicked. Why don't you search for Wicked and Hairspray on youtube.com and watch some of the clips that are on there.

I have friends in the Broadway casts of BOTH Wicked and Hairspray. :) Both are fun shows, but they are very different, and neither is like Chicago or Rent.
There will be a MOVIE version of the musical version of Hairspray, starring John Travolta, Michelle Pfeifer, Christopher Walken, and Queen Latifah, coming out in summer 2007 - plus, it's touring to smaller cities, so there's a chance you can see it closer to home, or on the screen very soon.
Wicked is only touring to large cities right now, and it will be a long time before there is a movie. I'd recommend you see Wicked in NYC, since you're less likely to have an opportunity to see it elsewhere.

I don't really think that you can compare those four musicals. I mean, Chicago and Hairspray both have the 'aspiring performer' aspect, but in completely different settings and moods (Chicago being kinda dark/slinky and Hairspray being upbeat/fun) as for Rent and Wicked, there's the Idina quotient. Idina rocks, but you won't be seeing her. I for one, LOVED Wicked and Rent. Those are two shows you can be obsessed with for months upon months. they both bring a new light to familiar situations (Rent, AIDS/homosexuality/drugs/the bohemian life and Wicked of course, the Wicked Witch of the West.) If you see wicked, read the book. it's hard to get through but SO amazing.

They're both very good - but very different.
"Hairspray" is silly fun - camp, over-the-top - really really energetic and fast paced. It has serious issues (racism, teen self-esteem, etc), but they're handled very amusingly. It's light, bright, and lively. Music is bubbly retro sixties music - very enjoyable.
"Wicked" is more serious - though there are funny parts, too. It's more atmospheric, handles it's serious issues less lightly. The sets, costumes, lights are beautiful - and the music is terrific. Music is contemporary pop/musical theatre music.
Neither is much like "Rent" or "Chicago," LOL
