I got several for $3.33 for 1 gallon pots a few months ago at Home Depot. They usually run $6 each. They do take a few years before they bloom. And I've read if you let them get too big (say let them grow for 10-15 years w/o splitting them) then you need a pickup truck and a chain to get them out the ground. I used to have a white bird of paradise. I had it for about 7 years before it bloomed. A gorgeous white and blue flower. The white b of p is the one that gets really tall, mine was over 8 ft tall.

Bought mine at clearance in Home Depot, paid $3 for a 12 inch pot. It is now about 7 feet tall, mine has the really large leaves on it, but has not bloomed. Saw the same plants in Florida outside, they are 15 feet or higher. Never has been any problem to grow.

There are two kinds: Giant with huge white flowers. Plants can reach 10-12 feet tall.
Smaller with blue & orange flower. This is the kind generally used in striking flower arrangements.
Grow best in zone 10 or 11 (tropics).
Disadvantages of both species: not frost tolerant; divide by tubors underground, very spreading
Advantages: gorgeous long lasting flowers

There are several varieties. Will not bloom until they are pot bound with at least 7 pup plants in the pot. Advantage: beautiful flowers, large showy plant.
Disadvantage: grow very large making them difficult to move.

I can tell you a couple of disadvantages and that it is very tempermental. Requires full sun and 60-70F temperature etc. Also it takes 5+ years to blossom from seed.
It is a beautiful plants though.

Be careful with your choice of species and variety. Not that i have grown any, but I have seen then range from around a 50cm tall plant to well over 5m tall with about a 3m width.

Like many popular plants, they are poisonous. If you live too far north, then they will perform poorly and may not survive. They are beautiful, though, and have a long blooming period.
