Ataturk yajnked an entire nation out of the Middle Ages and religious servitude and set them on an opposite course from the rest of the Muslim world. He banned the fez and the veil and made citizens take surnames. Thje Islamic calender was replaced with a Western one. they instituted a secular justice and gave women rights. Was he a great man for doing this? Will Turkey be the leader of a great reformation for Muslims?

Mustafa Kemal Ataturk was a respected man all around the world. He did anything to save his country and educate his peoples. He modernized Turkey. Gave Turkish people freedom to dress however they want and to choose their religion and their life style. He always believed education and modernization was the best way to make his country better. I still dont get why people think Turkey as a Muslim country, Turkish people has freedom to choose their religion and believe wahtever they want. They are also lots of Catholics and Jews living in Turkey. Turkey can be the leader for Muslim people but with more freedom.

Define a "great man". Sure, he reformed Turkey, and did great things for HIS people. However, the methods he used to get there were unforgivable.

Hitler was a "great man" too, but history regards him as a despot. He reformed his country, turned around one of the worlds biggest economic regressions and formed a global power capable of taking over most of Europe. However, it was the road that he took to form this power that is questionable. The ends never justify the means.

I think Ataturk was a great man. I am probably the only American Kemalist in the world.
