To understand what the lights are you first have to understand (to a certain extent) what warp is. Warp is the nacelles (the long engines at the back of the ship) causing a field or cocoon to engulf the ship and "warp the space around it; kind of like taking a piece of paper and folding it back and forth and back and forth until it resembles a fan. Now you can "jump from one end of the paper to the other in only about an inch of travel when it fact you have just actually travelled 8 inches across the paper (sorry for the simple explaination, but that is warp drive). Now the lights that are seen is the reminent of light that is not able to "catch' up to the speed of the ship due to travelling much slower than the warp of the ship. True it is the light from stars, but it is not actually the star floating by. Somewhat the same principle as the light that you see when you look at a star in the sky is actually the light emitted thousands of years ago...it just took that long to travel to Earth and your eye.
