I live in NJ and there are coyotes near my house and I was wondering if they scream like a girl or is it something they are attacking.

Maybe they were attacking a girl, and since you did not save her she now is dead.

The Coyote's I've encountered didn't sound like that, more like yelping. However hearing a Cougar scream will raise the hair on the back of your neck.

That would be a mountain lion (also called cougar or puma), or possibly a lynx or bobcat, though that is less likely. All those sound a lot a like and is does sound like you described.

Edit: I found this website which plays a sound the mountain lion makes. You scroll down on the left and click on cougar.

Edit #2: I found a link that does a lynx sound and it is nothing like a girl screaming, but is quite intimidating nevertheless.

Rabbits make a horrible screaming noise when they are dying. This is probably what you heard. That noise is like ringing the dinner bell for coyotes.

If anyone has peacocks (they're kept as pets more often than you might think), they generally get mistaken for women screaming. Turkey hunters also use peacock calls to lure turkeys. Here's a link so you can hear for yourself, just scroll down to peacock.
