Firstly, let me say that I'm a Colts fan and I sincerely hope they will win the Super Bowl this year but I was wondering if this thing with Manning and his lackluster performances may be an unconscious resistence or fear that he will one-up his father whom I know he greatly admires. Your thoughts? And please don't answer if all you're going to do is bash away.

Three reasons for you:

1) Peyton's personality is that of a planner (the opposite of his free-wheeling, seat of the pant brother, Eli). If he hasn't seen it and he get's hurried, he forces the ball.

2) 3-4 Defense; most of the year the Colts play 4-3 in their division (though this is changing across most the NFL). Between the 3-4 more athletic and speed backers and zone blitzes where apparent rushers drop into passing lanes, Peyton again ends up in something he didn't plan for and that is the key to beating the almighty student of the game - give him something he cannot prepare for.

3) Peyton will be the most prepared person on his offense - another way to beat him, is to beat his receivers - catch them (rarely) out of sync and not on the same page. How many times have you seen Peyton post-play pointing hysterically at a receiver that he zigged when he should have zagged. :)

I'm a Colt's fan and hope he now has Belichik's number. Go Colts - get that monkey off Peyton.

Teams know how to beat him. Let him have the short passes. As he moves down field there is less ground to defend. So when he get to the 20 yard line it is very dificult to pass esspecialy when the defense has no fear of the run. Lesser team he may get away with a few times or complete a long pass. But in the playoffs the team have tough defences. Stuff that works on the Raiders win not work here. So he has to force his passes and that is why he throws picks.
When was the last time a running back stepped up for the colts and carry the team. No one stepps up they wait for Payton to make a big play.
That is why he will not win. Look at Elway, he never one a superbowl until the bronocs got a back that can carry the team.
As long as NFL defensive coach feel the colt running game is nothing to worry about they will not win the big one.
When the cowboy won their 3 superbowl, they play the eagle 3 time that year. The first game they got blow away, troy looked horrible. The next 2 times Emmit had 200 yard games both times. This was the only team Troy had problems with but some else stepped up. So they could win.
Troy won 3 superbowl but he could not carry Payton jock strap.
The colt will win when they get a punishing ground game.
One won team who lead the in passing made to the super bowl and they lost, but yet they still call Dan Marino a lose.

Bottom line. Great QBs dont always win the big ones. Manning, like Marino, Kelly, and even Elway....were way too predictable, because they were the center of the of offense. Take that away, they lose in the championship game or the SB. Sad to say, the Pats will shut down the Colts again. Mannings passing will not be enough, unless Joseph Addai can have a 150 yrd game. Elway could not win until he got a running game to be the first option.

peyton is a very organized person, to where he needs to see what is going to happen. he, like you said, is afraid he might not live to the standards set by his father. he probably has fear in him like any other human of losing. i do hope it is his year this year. but like the ppl above me said, the offense is waiting for peyton to carry the weight for the team. yeah he's a great QB, maybe one of the greatest, but his offensive line is not working with him. some of them need to step up and carry some of the weight. maybe all that planning that peyton needs to do is causing him to have a receeding hair line (jk) but really if he can get his wide recievers out there w/o any defenders around and get the ball to them then that is game winning strategy there. also peyton is a person that has to do everything his way. he probably doesn't listen too much to Dungy. so maybe if he opened his ear to a little more opinion he might have a chance since Dungy has more experience. but overall i do wish Manning luck! he is one game away from his first superbowl! go Colts! Go Manning!

I seriously think all his problems lied with the fact that they did so good in the regular season. He was under a lot of pressure because they had the best record. They coasted through the end of the last couple seasons and than had a bye. He just wasn't as sharp after not playing competitively for about the last month of the season. That is why they are better this year.

Its the Manning Curse. No really, Peyton will win a Superbowl soon. Its just something that happens. Remember that no Manning won a heisman either. If Peyton does not win one, then I will believe the Manning Curse. Because the way Eli is going, Payton is the only chance.

Manning isn't the one with the problems because he doesn't play defense! The Colt's defense has been atrocious for the last couple of seasons and while Manning hasn't been a shining light in the playoffs, one can't hang all that on him alone.

The main problem is not with Peyton but with the offensive line. I don't care how good a quarterback you are if your line cant keep the defense in check any quarterback is going to struggle. The offensive line must protect Peyton for him to be successful.

it is because he is a perfectionist. he has said that himself. the pressure is off during the regular season because he will win atleast 11 games and win that division. when it comes to playoffs he just dug himself in such a hole that he cant dig himself out with some help. he has lost his confidence in the postseason. that defense has got themselves on their feet and can be the deciding factor next weekend. GOOO COLTS manning deserves 1.

Peyton's post season problems all boil down to too many losses and not enough victory's. Hope this clears things up for you.
