Now for an answer from someone that knows what they are talking about: The Alabama bus boycott that started soon after the December 1, 1955 arrest of Rosa Parks involved private citizens (black AND white) offering their private vehicles to help transport black citizens of Montgomery, Alabama from place to place. Also a large number of taxi cab drivers were black and they would often ferry black patrons for a reduced fare or they would pool several riders inside a single cab. However the city fathers of Montgomery refused to insure cab drivers who helped break the boycott until Martin Luther King Jr. secured short-term insurance policies from Lloyds of London to cover cab drivers until the boycott ended. Finally in January of 1957 the boycott came to an end.
And there you have it.

the MIA worked out a "private taxi" plan, under which blacks w ho owned cars picked up and dropped off blacks who needed rides at designated points. The plan was elaborate and took a great deal of planning; consequently, the MIA appointed a Transportation Committee to oversee it. The service worked so well so quickly that even the White Citizens Council (whose membership doubled during one month of the boycott) had to admit that it moved with "military precision." [11]

buses were a popular and inexpensive way to get around. Some cities still had trolleys though they were mostly phased out in the late 30ies or early 40ies.
