I have this glorious steel file cabinet from the late 19th century, and it is the perfect size for my computer tower.

I have not moved it there, because I don't know if it would be safe to place a computer's hard drive onto something metal.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

If you are referring to placing thecomputer tower onto the filing cabinet you will be fine. As a matter of fact probably better then placing it on the floor (the dust and all). If you are referring to removing the hard drive from the computer case and placing it on the filing cabinet then that is a bad idea. If you need the hard drive outside of the computer, fo whatewver reason, purchase an external USB drive case.

On top of is fine, inside of might be an issue if it restricts airflow going either into or out of the computer.

Yes, its fine.

Common things that damage hard disk drives the most are shock, high humidity and magnetic fields.

You need to be careful with your laptop around magnets and electric motors, not steel in general. It's fine!

Um, the computer's case is metal and it's also steel.
