gogglebball, there is alot to your question that you ask. First off let me point out that Money is not the number one thing on EVERYONES list, it however in everyones top three. Not because they want it there, but because they have no choice it was put there for them. It wasn't your decsion or mine for that matter, or most of the people alive today, but still none the less it is fact.
As far as people bettering themselves as a civilization, believe it or not we have on very many levels, but have not achieved the true sense of what should be as of yet, and probably won't in my or your lifetime. But somehow you seem to be missing that point. My question to you is what are you doing to better yourself as a person before you worry about the rest of the world?? I only ask this because the more you do to try to better yourself you'll find that there are more people just like you and you can influence others by your example. And believe it or not they are making a difference.
As far as money destroying us....... well let's just say it might if put into the wrong hands. Attitudes, Personality, and education will certainly kill us long before money ever does. I say this because if a "Poor" person with a "Poor" attitude, a "Poor" personality, and a "Poor" education ever comes into the money needed to influence the world in the own way they would like, that would be what destroys us. The MONEY itself has nothing to do with it other than providing the means. But if you take that same person and change the word "Poor" to "Good" the outcome is entirely different.
Money won't destroy us......we will

Well if you see the human civilization for the past 3000 years or more, wouldn't you say that we have bettered ourselves? At the same time I don't believe that this has come about by an specific effort on anyone's part (though there have been inspirational efforts all throughout history).
Now since I give an contrary view I will answer why we do 'in a way' try and better ourselves.
Humans are blessed with intelligence which I think came through a random act of evolution. Intelligence leads us to take our survival instincts to the next level. First we try and improve our security and that's how we started living in society. Then our social needs came to the fore and so we try and meet them. Now we try and meet our hierarchical needs, individually and collectively (refer maslow's hierarchy). Net affect is improving standards and development. That is what we perceive as humans trying to better their civilization.

I am sooooooo sorry that the human race has disappointed you...
It was just 100,000 years ago we were having this same conversation on the internet, about how the world was consumed with greed, seashells, seashells, and more seashells... Thinking how much better off we would be if more people died of stange illnesses.
No wait!!! That never happened, because 100,000 years ago there was no internet and we were too busy hunting and fighting for survival to worry about what snot-nosed little weasels had to say about society. We were killing and eating those weasels, trying to ward off starvation and hoping our children lived a little longer than the 20 - 26 year life span we could expect.
There are many things that drive humans, and most which are "comforts". Food, Shelter, Sex and Protection. These things have not changed, they have just been given pricetags. Now it takes money to be comfortable. However, without the drive to have these comforts, many things would not exist. Transversely, if our society had used more "Protection" there would be fewer mouths to feed and fewer mouths spewing this drivel, about society needing to take care of the witless the thoughtless the lazy and the weak. I do not know how you managed to make it this far, but survival of fittest, is pretty self-explanatory.
What about all the lazy generations of people, living off societies tit. Making it harder for those who work hard to get ahead.
The ones that get fat on welfare, while those too proud and honorable to take charity do without... Those who starve to death in this country, while the bleeding hearts send millions to foreign lands to feed children noone wants but have anyway, knowing their fate, but without the decency to use contraception...
Let society worry about carrying the strong into the future, and let God care for those, he takes away from their misery...
May the fat and lazy become the hungry and productive or the skinny and dead.
Then maybe, just maybe, there would be a society, that provides for the temporarily down and out, and prevents the unecessary suffering of children, and has no need for the opinions of those think that money will destroy us, when it is actually the liberal attitude that we are responsible for our brother even if he is irresponsible, that wiil destroy us, by dragging down the strong and yoking them to the wagon of other people's laziness.

Everything has pros and cons to it. Money, unfortunately is the tool of stratification in the societies of first-world countries and it is also a tool used to bargain, intimidate and opress other nations. Money also goes hand in hand with capitalism which in itself is the so called "rat race". But if the rest of the world were to live the same quality of standards as citizens of first-world countries, the Earth itself would be uninhabitable in just a few years. Now if the WHOLE world share the same quality of living, many sacrifices would have to take place. Firstly, capitalism (and in some ways, democracy) would be abolished all together and be replace with some form of socialism or communism to ensure the equality of everyone. Secondly, the consummerist and wasteful lifestyles of citizens of first-world countries could not continue do to equality.
Money is not the only problem. Religion is can be the greatest instrument of unification and prosperity or it can be the greatest instrument of division, evil and self-destruction. There has been much strife and attrition due to clash of different beliefs. Tolerance is key to unity. Unity is the key to prosperity and the constancy of culture, civilization and humanity.

As much as we would like to think otherwise, human civilization indeed continuously improves itself. One proof is the increase in population (I know, it's only quantitative) which means that the Earth is able to increasingly support human existence (or subsistence).
Also, the quality of living in most societies have improved significantly. This can be attributed to the predominance of liberalism in modern states. The idea of "progress through gradual change" has driven most people to look for better ways of doing things. If the conservatives have ruled the world, we would have been stuck in the middle ages and would never have experienced "enlightenment".

You should understand even through the beginning of time, money has been an issue. And of course, their were tyrants, or usurpers of greed as there are today. (Now, Kings can be placed in this too.) Now Greed, leads to money, and money leads to power. But the strange thing of it is, I assume an adage: "More greed, more power." And these three things mentioned lead to destruction, death, and even farther as we know. So as civilization changes, humans stay the same. We seem to be the only ones who haven't evolved.

The world is not so black and white. There are a lot of people working to better the world in small and large ways. There are other people only out for what they can get, but you can recognize these people fairly easily--and take my advice avoid them and/or don't elect them to public office. But most of the people are in the middle grey area--they can go either way.

Civilization is working. Capitalism is not evil, nor is money. Civilization is just a baby right now. It is still in training wheels. Give it a chance. Ignore those that would have you believe the "Chicken Little Agenda". The sky is NOT falling. Evil is a tough adversary, but believe me when I say, it may take several eons but goodness will prevail. It will win out over evil!

All some people have ever cared about is money. This is nothing new.
Personally, if people took better care in better themselves individually, the whole would benefit. Maybe that's the problem. People don't think to better the self first.

People are too selfish to worry about others in civilization, they are to worried about themselves in the here and now. Why worry about tomorrow, we won't be here. No one thinks that when they invent something like game systems, computers, phones, cars etc. that makes us lazier and less productive.
My grandmother keeps saying we just grow weaker and wiser. Think about it.
