I actually looked this question up on here...and someone asked pretty much the same thing about 4 months ago, but I don't really think the explanation was clear or thorough enough...

I still can't see why "sisters" would be the better term than "brothers"...

Anyone have anymore insight?

Maybe because only woman can have children. So a large company can own many smaller companies, that would be it's 'children'. So it would have to be female. Sisters and mothers etc.

Sister company is simply a more polite way of saying,
"the other company we own"
Old school lingo for sure, men always called there cars "she"
yep my 52 Chevy " shes a real beauty "
brother company ( very less used ) they own us.

Good question. I work for a joint venture, and both of our parents are Mothers! Go figure!!
