That is if you are doing a compare/contrast and you are looking to do just similarities, not differences. There are really many options here. Another way to come up with a theme is to ask yourself what you found most fascinating about the stories. Write down a list of the five most interesting things (from your own point of view) from each story. Then see if any of them are similar. So, say you thought that Lord of the Flies seemed to suggest that humans are violent and war-like by nature and you also had noticed that the Scarlet Letter illustrated how evil and cruel humans are. There you would have a good tie-in. Combine the ideas into a single thesis.
