I've had three children. With my first my water broke but I didn't know it until I reached the hospital. I'm still baffled about it. With my 2nd my water broke in the hospital but I was already long into my labor. With my 3rd I was induced and they had to break my water. Everyone is different. My sister had no symptoms of labor until her water broke. She knew it broke because she felt a painless pop and there was fluid running down her legs. I never experienced the "pop" sensation except when I was induced. The two times I was in labor without being induced I started experiencing craps like I was going to start my period. They would last for about 60 seconds give or take a few seconds. They were contractions. They started mild and after a few hours became stronger and stronger. I waited at home until my contractions were 5 minutes apart. I would have waited longer (until the 3 minutes apart like my doctor suggested) but I had a slightly bloody thick discharge and knew it was time to go. You'll know when you need to go. Don't worry much about it. Your instincts will guide you. Congratulations and Good luck! God bless you, your little one and your family!

Most women their water never breaks and it gets broken by the nurse in the hospital to help move along your labor. Every woman is different most of the time you will start to lightly bleed followed by what can feel like a stitch in your side to menstrual cramps or more painful sensations. The minute you start feeling these pains just relax go walk around somewhere and remember to breathe thru the contractions doesnt matter if you squat to get thru it or put your hands on your knees and bend over some take the cues from your body and when you count them around five minutes apart call the doctor or hospital but you may be a lucky woman who goes into labor and has the baby two hours later. When at the hospital you will be monitored and given an IV as well as pitocin to help the contractions to stay strong. Once you have had a bag of IV solution and are to like 4 cm you will be allowed to have an epidural which i recommend. Typically your contractions willl have your mind off the big needle that will go into your back and they numb you first with lidocaine which feels alittle bit like a bee sting. The earlier you get the epidural the better it allows your body to relax and you can rest plus you can remember things a lot better than trying to do iv drugs only to get a epidural in the end. So remember follow your bodies cues and you will know when it is time. Good luck

contrary to popular belief, your water breaking isn't always the first sign that you are going into labor, and it doesn't always mean a big puddle on the floor. The best way to know if you are going into labor is having contractions that are evenly spaced apart. You will be in active labor when they are about five minutes apart. Then your cervix will dilate out to ten centimeters, and then you will deliver your baby. A little while after that, you will deliver the placenta. Good luck!

If the water breaks first, (and TRUST me you will know it broke), before the labor pains start, call your doctor, It will be unmistakable when the labor pains start, they usually start in the lower back, and gradurate from there. Sometimes the water has to be broken by the doctor, and other times it does it w/no help.
Good luck, and Congrats!
I've already been through 3, so yeah experience is talking. No I didn't have the pain meds, mine were pure natural.

How will you know???

Well, here is my experience!! I was so afraid of my water breaking out in public or something and thank goodness it happened at home.

I woke up like I always did 5 times a night or so to go to the bathroom.... I walked in the bathroom went pee and back to bed I went... Well, I hopped back up on bed like always and all the sudden I felt a pop kind of like a ballon..... and GUSH..... here comes some water... well, i was half asleep did I pee or did my water just break... I woke up my husband and said umm hunny I think my water just broke... he said... No, you just peed yourself... go sit on the toliet and see if anything else comes out... So I did and all the sudden another gush..... OH CRAP my water broke!!!

So, I took a shower and was ready to look beautiful for my visit to the hospital and wanted to look beautiful for my son to come... well, this didn't last long.... got out to the car on a towel and all the sudden another "GUSH" I think I had 3 more "GUSHES" on the way to the hospital 18 min drive.

I arrived at the hospital soaking wet... Oh, I felt gross and embarrassed but soo excited as well. My husband parked up in the front and got a wheel chair came and got me locked up the car and took me in.

We walked into the L&D and they were expecting us... the wanted me to get checked to make sure that my water broke. I was sitting in the wheel chair still waiting on the nurse... and all the sudden another big "GUSH" .... The nurse came in and i was the only patient in there... I said umm I just made a mess on the floor.... She said Ahh, I guess we don't have to check and see if your water broke let's get you a room....

Sooo, it was exciting.... yucky but a funny memory I'll never forget.. .

That's how I knew my water broke!!

you know, this is a great question. but sadly i don't know about the water breaking. the nurses did that for me. but i knew i was going to have my baby soon, even before the contractions. my husband and i just had sex. well afterwards i noticed a little red spot on the bed. i immediately got my bags packed while my husband was like "just come to bed"...lol. sure enough 2 hours later i woke up with menstrual like cramps that came and went. they were so bad i couldn't move, talk or breathe. i even called my mom to tell her and eventually threw the phone at my husband because i couldn't finish a sentence. of course my mom knew due to that fact...lol

well my water had to be broken..i was induced...but you will feel it...it will be like someone turned on a very warm faucet at full force....as for the stages...I can just tell you that you start to get light contractions then they just get stronger and closer together...I am sure you will no when and if you have any doubts call you doc or go the the hospital.

Alot of people's water doesn't break until active labor- it's a big misconception that it'll be likely to burst open in the middle of Wal-Mart. LOL Internally it will feel like alot of lubricant, like after an exam (that's the best thing I can think of) and externally it will feel like you've peed yourself. Happy pushing!

i disagree with everyone who says 'you will know!!' my water was broken for almost a day and i was still doubtful because i didn't want to go the to hospital for the 3rd time during the week i was due under false labor!! it does 'trickle' but you will notice it most when you stand or change positions suddenly. it can gush but if either happens, it will keep leaking little bits also. it will also smell kinda sweet. congrats!!

you'll know. it's like peeing your pants, but you know that you didn't pee. my water never broke and my doctor had to break it. you'll know when it's time. when you start to get really bad period like cramps and they come and go, those are true contractions. when they are 5 minutes apart, go to the hospital. you might want to look into taking a birthing class.
