If you're the accused in a criminal case and can't afford an attorney, the court will appoint a public defender to handle your case. It's in the constitution.

Even if you get a public defender, you may want to get consultation from another attorney or legal service, because PDs are so busy and over worked they don't have time to really fight for your case. An email attorney for only $35/hr for on line consultation is well worth the money. Good luck!

The pro bonos are usually cases that they believe have political significance. The no fee up front are ones that will get a settlement like an accident or work comp, and they get paid when the settlement occurs.
You may check your local law school to see if any grads want to take your case for experience but remember,
YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR !
If you have a lot to loose, (like doing jail time) you might go for plan B - PAY the guy.
