Im trying to work out a budget for my 13 year old clothes for the year. Im using a new envelope system and will be adding to the fund weekly. I want to include underwear socks, sneakers...Everything. I was wondering what everyone else is spending. I dont expect her to shop at walmart. Im not saying I'm against it. I shop there and would love if she did, but I get why she doesnt want to. Kids are harsh and she's just trying to fit in. Any advice.

im also pretty young, and my budget is kinda high up, but that doesnt mean im not into cute stores like forever twenty-one, but i would advise to skip limited 2 its actually pretty lameand just let her splurge on what she really wants every now and then, so she knows that you really do love her and want her to have what she wants

I agree. Is hard to fit in. "Omg, you don't wear hollister, get away from me" -.-

I wouldn't give too much money to your daughter. Since teens are not earning their own money, they shouldn't be spending that much. I would suggest $100 a month. Shop at cheap stores like Forever 21 or JCPenny. Try not going to Macy/Northstorm. Clothes are expensive there. Ltd Too is good, but the stuff there is kinda overpriced.

The first thing you need to decide is how much you can spend, and how much you want to spend. Each family has their own budget, and can't be compared since no two household incomes and expenses will be exactly the same.

What you could try is window shopping on line, to see what average prices are like at the stores she wants to shop at, then look at the prices of discount stores (Wal-Mart, K-Mart, Target, etc...) Find the middle ground, and set that as your budget per piece of clothing.

For example, a pair of jeans at Wal-Mart is $20. A pair of jeans at the "cool" stores she wants to shop at are $60. Allow for $40 per pair of jeans, at a middle of the road store, like JC Penney or Macy's.

This is how we figure our budget:
1. Figure out how much each item will cost. Say $40 for jeans, $20 for a shirt, $30 for sweaters and sweatshirts, $60 per pair of sneakers, etc...
2. Then decide how many of each she needs: 5 pairs of jeans, 5 shirts, 5 sweaters/sweatshirts, 2 pairs of sneakers, etc...
3. Multiply: $40 x 5 = $200 for jeans, $20 x 5 = $100 for shirts, $30 x 5 = 150 for sweaters/sweatshirts, $60 x 2 = $120 for sneakers, etc...
4. Then total your amounts: $200 + $100 + $150 + $120, etc...
5. Divide your total by 50, as in 50 weeks in a year. The two extra weeks that you put money away allows for error, and anything that comes up, like she suddenly needs a dress for a dance.

So let's say that your total for her clothing (#4) comes to $1,000. You would put $20 a week aside for her clothing budget. The weeks that you can't afford the full amount to put away, make up for it in the following 2 weeks, $30 per week, so you aren't cutting yourself short by putting two weeks, $40, out of one paycheck.

Stores like forever 21 and Charlotte russe are cheap. I started shopping there when I was 13, too. Limited too has cute stuff, but invest in good things there because if you are budgeting yourself then they can be pricey. Also, check Mervyns and Kohls, they have cute things for girls her age too. If you have a Kohls, try the Candies brand, I loved it and still do.

Although I'm an old teenager (17), I would say that around ~400 would be just right. Don't give your daughter too much extra or else she'll be tempted to burn it; if you give her just enough, it'll force her to learn to budget for herself for clothes and things she really wants. You can increase the amount when she becomes older, and encourage her to save for big item purchases like a car or college, etc.

I go to the garage and stitches but i dont know if they have those where you live. You could als go to Hollister, Abercrombie or american eagle. Yes these clothes are kind of expensive but if you but them a size bigger they will fit for a long time and they wear and wash really well!

well you'd have to think of where your daughter shops, if you shops at walmart you'd probably never spend over 10 dollars for a shirt, but if she shops at places like hollister you can easily spend 20 dollars on a shirt

I'm 13 as well.
And I have to pay for my own clothes.
How it is for me is that I get 13 dollars a week
8 dollars for clothing, and 5 for regular stuff
but I just use it all for clothes. :]
And I'd say that it works pretty well
