How is it if a person committed a felony at 17 and now 42 mature adult, we are not permitted to own a handgun for the purpose of sport, I have friends that target shoot at the local ranges and have become hooked at the competition it provides, is their a waiver one can apply for?

You can't do it because the law says so. Not sure where you're going with that part of the question.

You could petition the court to seal your juvenile record or waive the provision of your sentence that prohibits firearm possession. To all problems, the law provides a solution, but in this case it probably won't be easy.

Laws vary from state to state. One of the factors in determining if you're eligible is whether or not you were tried as an adult. Best place for info is a local gun shop. 99.9% of them will have business cards on the counter, and one of them will be an attorney specializing in firearms. Another option - again, this depends on your location - go to the range with a friend who has a carry permit - he's carrying, you're not. You don't need a permit to USE a gun, you just need a permit to CARRY one, and in most states, they just do a background check for purchase, there's not a "permit" for buying one. And, if you're married, even though you can't own a gun, your spouse can. :-)

you can always reapply for your 2nd ammendment rights
i dont remeber who you go to though...ask a lawyer or
one of your state reps.

sporting purposes probably wont fly though.....

if you coul dshow that you REALLY need to hunt to
put food on the table...maybe...
