IS IT REALLY TRUE IF YOU ADD THEM UP AS THE SONG SAYS IT IS RIGHT

Yes it is true you can use the deck of cards as described in this song. Texas Tyler sang a version of this song. To add them up it is 1 + 2 + 3 + 4 etc to 13 then times 4 which brings it to 364. BUT in some decks there is an extra heart spot on the Queen making it 365. I have a copy of this song and have played it before answering and everything is correct. (I even went through the deck as described!).

Thank you for reminding me of such a good song.

Regards Mark.

While most of the claims in the song appear to be correct, the number of spots adding up to 365 simply does not work out. Given that the "picture cards" are just that, pictures and not spots, then the number of spots on the Ace to 10 cards in each suit add up to only 55 or 220 for the whole pack. Even adding the small spots that appear on the edges of the cards along with the number or letter of that card, you would still get only 81 spots per suit or 324 for the whole pack.

Mystery solved!

From Brian Kitchen's scan of the tract, I can read the actual words printed, which are longer than those supplied by the Reverend Taylor. Towards the end they say:

When I count how many spots there are in a pack of cards, I find there are threee hundred and sixty-five, there are so many days in the year.
Stop, said the mayor that is a mistake.
I grant it, said the soldier, but as I have never yet seen an Almanack that was teoroughly[sic](thoroughly) correct in all points it would have been impossible for me to have imitated an Almanack exactly without a mistake.
Your observations are very correct said the mayor. Go on.

So, it would appear that the total of 365 was a mistake after all.

Whether it was true or not it was a thought provoking song that was written by T.Texas Tyler and first published in 1948.It was charted in versions by Tyler and Phil Harris in 1948 and later by Wink Martindale in 1959 and Max Bygraves in 1973.

No, its not true.

For instance the nonsense about the number of spots adding up to 365.

There are an even number of playing cards in a pack, and multiplying anything by an even number gives an even number....so the total number of spots on the 52 cards must be even...therefore it can't be 365
