I'd try going online. Most stores don't carry any core sets older than 7th Edition. I'd be prepared to spend about $25-$30 for a deck that old. Note: Core set decks are usually 40 cards. They could have been 60 cards but I don't think they were.

This place has 5th Edition decks but you have to buy both decks and its $58 - http://www.dacardworld.com/gaming/item.das?sku=BVNM0UH57T&nPar=2

In NYC? I'm not sure you would hve any available there, esp. 5th edit. cards. But I do know for certain that you can buy many 3rd edit and up cards from starcitygames.com. thats the only reputable online site I have found. For 9th edit. and current expansions, try target or walgreens or something.

Try anycraze.com they have every card you can imagine on there. Plus, when my husband and all his friends that played Magic were stationed in Iraq they shipped a ton of cards to them very quickly..we love that site.
