There are many advantages. These include the ability to share information with other users on the network, the ability to share ONE Internet connection (DSL or Cable, for example), and the ability to share one or more printers with other computer users on the same network.

An Internet connection opens up a whole new electronic world of things like online gaming, email, chat sites, web sites, file transfers, music and video downloads, etc.

As far as disadvantages, well, obviously if you connect your computer to other computers (including the Internet), you run a risk of having someone possibly try to delete or steal the information on your computer, of getting "infected" by a computer virus or spyware, and the risk of someone just trying to remotely get control over your computer for mischief or dastardly deeds...
