I don't know, but I see this all the time in our local newspaper in the classified section under employment opportunities, especially for clerical and office jobs. If you are otherwise qualified for the job, I think it is a form of discrimination, particularly since the native language in the United States is ENGLISH. Do you honestly think if you went to Mexico and looked in the newspaper under employment opportunities that you would find ads that said: Must be able to speak English? I seriously doubt it!

P.S. To the person who said that Americans are afraid to force Hispanics to learn English - what's to be afraid of? There is no reason for them to learn English because certain people/ establishments/companies make it so easy for them to NOT learn English. Everywhere you go, most everything is printed in English and Spanish. If you use an automated service on the telephone, there are instructions in English and Spanish. For some insane reason, our country continues to cater to the non-English speaking population. Since when did Spanish become our native language? Do you think that if we went to Mexico that they would cater to us because we didn't speak Spanish?

Unfortunately the Government also does this so of course they can not tell other employers not to do it. I think it has to do with the number of Spanish speaking immigrants who do not take advantage of schooling in the US and that this is now running through 4 generations.
It is hard for me to be critical about this because I am the Grandchild of immigrants and my Great Grandparents did not speak English well or write it. My Grandparents were also immigrants but came here when they were younger and 3 were school age. If my Grt. Grandparents went somewhere where they did not understand they brought someone to translate usually my parents because my Grandparents were working.
This employer would want it to be unnecessary but this is the population they serve. Look on the bright side you have skills ...take them to someplace they will be appreciated.

Hi! First off, I am definite you're going to discover that a transfer to Canada is a unusual determination find it irresistible used to be for me! If I would possibly, seeing that you're from New York, I could propose Toronto off the bat seeing that the 2 are particularly normal. So, in keeping with your questions; one million) English is spoken in all places however Quebec, wherein French is reliable. However, in materials of Western Quebec and in specific Montreal, English is simply as normal, if no longer extra normal than French. If you recall the some distance North (Arctic places) a quantity of Native languages can also be spoken in additional far off cities and groups furthermore to English. two)If you desire low-cost, most commonly at any place external of Toronto, Montreal, Vancouver and Calgary are very low-cost however I could propose relocating to one of the crucial aforementioned towns. However, Halifax may be very excellent and quite low-cost as is Ottawa. These towns are so much smaller than New York, as you need to recognize. The suburbs of Toronto are beautiful colourful truthfully with a quantity of recent 'town centre' tasks and the ones are extra low-cost. three) Overall, I could certainly propose Toronto seeing that it's so colourful, tolerant and multicultural. There is a quite hip scene downtown and considering that immigrating right here, I have wholly loved myself. four) I consider that on the second, the Canadian is truthfully simply above parity with the dollar however just about they're even in the meanwhile. If one of the skills is "speaking Spanish", and you don't speak Spanish, then no you don't have the skills!

A business exists to make a profit, pure & simple; if a percentage of that businesses potential customers are primarily Spanish-speaking, only a stupid business would hire people who do not speak at leat English and Spanish.

Spanish may well be the easiest language in the world to learn, next to "Esperanto"...

Quit whining and learn it!

well, is it in the job description that you need to be fluent or be able to speak in a another language? many companies sees it as an added value if their employees are bi-lingual. i'm a filipino working in china and i have to tell you that language does play an important role in business... especially when the global marketplace has shrunk... anyone can sell anything to anyone and being able to speak in your customer's language is an asset that any company would like to have.

if you have free time maybe you can invest in learning another language.... a language that you feel can be useful at work and outside work.

if you got the job... congratulations. if not good luck job hunting!
