You should have an appt with a Ultrasound technician at 20 weeks gestation (out of 40) to examine all parts of the fetus, brain, heart chambers, etc. Leg length, amniotic fluid will all be tested.

At that time you can ask for information about your baby's sex. You can find out earlier but likely it's "out of the ordinary" to have an ultrasound for no reason (i.e., insurance won't pay) UNLESS there is a problem.

At about 16 or so weeks, our doctor "for fun" had the ultrasound machine out and we snuck in there when the radiology assistant was at lunch and he check our baby's sex... he said a BOY and he was right!

keep in mind that it is never a sure thing, b/c depending on the position of the baby, amount of fluid, and density of surrounding tissues, certain features may not appear on the sonogram, or they may seem to be there when they are not! but in your 5th month, they should be able to make a pretty good guess, and each sonogram afterwards will (for the most part) confirm or contradict the prediction. Suprises do happen, though! My mom had four kids. the first three were "definately boys" throughout the pregnancies. Turns out, none of us were! Oops!

12 to 16 weeks when the doctor does the ultra sound. And you should be able to see female genitalia if it's a girl. Not just the absence of male genitalia.

I've got three kids. Three ultra sounds done after 12 weeks were very clearly accurate. One ultra sound done at 8 weeks and the doctor tried to guess. She was wrong. She was an idiot but, that's another story.

at your ultrasound... sometime after 16 weeks. Usually around 18-22 weeks is when they do the ultrasound. But they can only tell if the baby does not have it's back faced to you or it's legs closed

Sex cannot be determined accurately until the 18th weeks, usually will have an ultrasound between 18 and 22 weeks, they can tell you then.

At your ultrasound, for most people it's around 20 weeks, but that's only if they can determine due to the baby's position. They are also not always right.

You usually don't find out the sex of your baby untill your 20 week ultrasound. The baby sometimes isn't developed enough untill then. Depending on your baby, you can sometimes find out earlier. It also depends on your personal preference.

Good luck!!!

You can get a 3-D ultrasound at 4 months and they can also tell the sex by the heartbeat.
