so far i've charged
the battery, filled it with diesel & had the starting motor changed, checked the oil & water, can you help as I don't know anything about engines & am at the end of my teghther with all the bad luck I've had lately! It's freezing outside, I've got 5 kids & all n all it's a nightmare without transport! It's unbeleivabley hard work. I'd be really grateful of a reply in simple text that even a kid could understand as I'm not really in the know when it comes to these things, but I do know if I go to a garage I'll get ripped off as it's quite obvious how clueless & desprate I am to get this bus fixed. As I am really lost without my wheelz that I've come to love it gives me independance & makes my life alot easier.

I'm surprised no-one has mentioned the obivous - GLOWPLUGS/HEATER PLUGS!

Cheap to do but can be a pig to fit.

A temporary solution is to go to halfords and buy a can of EasyStart. Spray it into the air intake (where the air filter sits) and once that stuff hits the engine, it jumps into life.

Might also be an airleak. It's not very often anything more serious. Contact me on puggtiracer@yahoo.co.uk if that doesn't solve it.

Good luck

The first thing I would recommend is to check your battery connections. Make sure there is no corrosion where the battery connects to the wires. Many people purchase new batteries and new alternators and quickly have the same problem again, but a battery terminal cleaner will cost very little and can be bought at almost any car parts store (in the U.S. anyway!).

Could be a number of thing`s .
glow plug`s ( sometimes called heater plug`s )
could be the fuel leak off pipe`s are split .
could be the fuel pump relay not working .
could be the fuel pump it`self not working .
could be a slipped / snapped cam belt .
could be that the fuel is draining back to your tank over night or after being stood a few hour`s .
the list is endless you really do need a professional to look at it for you as you wont find the answer on here as without looking at the van everyone would just be guessing . have you joined the AA / RAC ? a friend of mine did this just to find out what the problem was with their car as a garage call out was more than the joining fee of the AA ! they said what the problem was and it was fixed a few hour`s later ( i would of fixed it my self had they lived closer but they live 90 miles away from me )

make shure you have a good earth to the starter motor, also it could be the engine oil if not been changed for a long time as old oil gets realy thick when cold,.if you have ran out of fuel at sometime it could be a air lock in the fuel system, you have to bleed the air out, wast plenty of fuel to make shure all the air is out, make shure you have put diesel fuel in and not petrol,

you told us your problems but not those of the van!!!!!!
but as it's an old transit it's probably the injectors often seized in the head so chuck a couple of bottles of injector cleaner in the fuel tank first, if it improves but don't fix fit the injectors.
if that doesn't work post the problems of the VAN!

Sounds like maybe alternator problems!

Try finding a local mechanic you can trust and stay away from places like Kwik-fit and the like who will charge you a bomb
