my parents are both retired and they are in their late 60s. they're poor and don't own a home. the only asset they have is 30K savings in a bank, which they will probably run out of in a few years. they collect social security which barely pays for their food and some of their bills.

i'm afraid that i won't be able to take care of them when they get older or i will become destitute myself trying to help them.

are there any government programs out there they can qualify for. i've heard of medicaid, ssi and welfare but i don't know what i they would qualify for or how they should go about asking for help ?

does anyone have any life experience in this area and could give me some pointers?

thank you

Yes contact Family Services-they should be able to help you with a list.. Also Legal Aid.
Look on web--under "your" State Government--should have a listing of all benefits and who qualifies
And find out about RX--biggest cost usually---circuit breaker (Senior Services).

There are some Medicare programs they might qualify for that will reduce some costs for them. Have them notify Medicare by phone for an update on special programs. I asked to be sent info on AARP--American Association of Retired Persons. I have their Summer 2006 Benefits Directory, but called for info to be sent to me regarding an updated Benefits Directory, joining AARP, and info for whole life insurance. Have your parents call 1.888.687.2277 or visit www@aarp.org. Good luck!
