I believe the classic notion of the American Dream is that a person born into a lower economic class can 'pull himself up by the bootstaps' and move into a higher economic class. The idea behind that is that it is easier in America (meaning the US, even though America includes Central and South America, Mexico and Canada, too) for a poor person to get rich because of so-called free enterprise.

Unfortunately, there are many indications that the growing gap between the rich and the poor is making the American Dream more difficult to achieve in the US than it is in other countries. Quality of Life indicators, like percentage of leisure time, etc. are showing higher in European countries.

In my opinion, greed and fear are diminishing the American Dream.

We live in a free country, whether its as free as it used to be or not. The american dream was and still is that we have the opportunity and the freedom to grow and develop ourselves, as individuals , as a company , as a state or as a nation. The problem as i see it is we have allowed corruption in goverment and now we dont know how to remove it . we are the people that cast the votes that elect the officials that end up running this country, but yet the wrong ones seem to be in control directly or covertly so that the country as a whole has to suffer for it, People have come from all over the world to america, the land of opportunity and we the american people that have been here a long time see that our opportunities have diminished while the opportunities of those who have moved here from another nation are actually in many cases greater than ours, whats up?Its not the fault of the people from the other nations, because once they have satisfied their citizenship requirements they are americans too! what iam talking about is the politicians and what they do . we have alot of immigrants and many of them are working and many under the table while many long time americans go without jobs, this needs fixing asap. the american people tho still have the american dream, if we look at those who first started this country, they didnt even have any roads! we are a spoiled people, we have so much that we take for granted that many in other countrys do not have, ya know ,think of the people in africa, that at this very moment i understand many in the thousands if i have the numbers right are actually in chains as slaves while we sit here and answer questions and do whatever it is that we do, that slavery is alive and well in africa and nothing so far has stopped it, so for us in this country we sure dont have anything to whine about while our fellow human beings across the world are held and bound in chains in slavery. but yes the american dream is alive here in america we will probably move at a slower pace then we might want because of the war and some other problems but we can still progress. These were my thoughts , i guess i got on the soapbox there for a bit ,sorry. take care, thank you, bob L.

In the 40's and 50's the American Dream was simply to have a house and a career. Security and a place to raise a family. Now it seems that the American Dream is merely to survive. Rising gas prices, Unemployment, War, Homelessness, Racism, Murder, and a plethora of other problems have got the poor hating the rich and the rich just not giving a damn. I'm surprised now that the Government has actually stepped up and, due to the high cost of living, raised minimum wages, and allowed foreign car manufacturers to conduct business here in the U.S. creating jobs. Im a Republican but after the Bush Admin. Im really proud of the Democrats. Stop focusing on crap overseas and take care of whats at home.

My opinion of American Dream is that it is like anyother thing "American"! Someone will decide what dream you shall have. Someone will perfect the art and the management of the dream sequence and some Stephen Speilberg will make a movie of of the Dream and the Americans will start to believe that this is the great American Dream.

And, we will, all, believe or be made to believe that we have the Democratic freedom to dream what we want to..

I believed in the american dream at one point in my life. Then I realized that you have to set goals for yourself and never give up, ever, no matter who doubts you. Have your own dream, it'll come to fruition alot sooner. That's how I achieved so much.
