We have had sucess with spreading powdered Borax that you can buy in the laundry section of your local supermarket, around the perimeter of your home. They wont cross it.
Then for indoors, get some plastic lids, the type off of yogurt, and mix this up and put it into the lids and center them in front of their possible entries from outdoors.
Mix the borax with pancake syrup (cheap kind is ok) until it is a runny consistency. Add a drop or two of cooking oil and mix it up. Put onto the lids. These are cheap ant traps and they work for us. We got this from a reliable person at our local Garden center. And If I am right this is for the tiny black ants but may not work as well for red ants.
Give it a try, and good luck.

When I had this problem in my kitchen, I look outside the house in the area by the kitchen and found a lot of small ants and majorly sprayed that area. Now no more ants in the house.
