System has been opened numerous times and has been vacuumed about 3 times and filled with Freon about 3X in last 7 years. What the heck is inside the tank anyway?

there is a dessicant bag and a fine strainer inside the reciever/dryer. they can go bad in different ways. most common is left open, or system loses its charge, for an extended period of time, and the dessicant bag gets saturated w/ moisture. after all, it's absorbing water all the time. thats its job. the dessicant bag can also break. if it does, the sand-like particles will find their way to the compressor, and compressor failure is soon and severe. if there is any doubt, replace it. they are fairly cheap, considering the costs of the compressor. if the dessicant bag is saturated, the outside of the dryer will likely freeze up like a big iceball when a/c is being used. if you suspect dryer is saturated, you can vacuum the system at more than 30 inches of vacuum for about 2 hours. water under this kind of vacuum will literally boil, and the vacuum will remove the water vapor from the system.

You ever see those little packets that come inside boxes that say do not eat? That's whats inside it takes moisture out of the system. If you have opened the system 3 times you should put a new one on. Most car companies say that anytime you open the a/c system you need a new drier.

If the dryer is cold when running the system, don't worry about. If the decadent inside the dryer is saturated with moisture, water and freon will combine to create an acid that will eat through your evaporator.
