We all know that smoking causes lung cancer. We all know how much this costs the health service. Obesity can give rise to diabetes, respitory problems, asthma, heart disease, kidney disease, liver failure, infertility, stomach cancer, colon cancer, weakening of the joints, stress and chronic fatigue amongst other things. All of which cost the NHS vast amounts more than smoking related illness both in terms of bed space as well as financial concerns.
Therefore my question is this. Why is it socially acceptable to ask a smoker, in public, normally using offensive language and a raised voice, to stop smoking. Yet it is considered offensive to ask salad dodgers to stop eating?

Smoking can cause more than just lung cancer, FYI.
But your question has a simple answer: smoking can cause harm to others; being overweight has no health effects on others, just the person who is overweight.
When a person is smoking in a room of non-smokers, they are subjecting the non-smokers to the same hazards as they are inflecting on themselves, including cancer. When an obese person is eating in a room of "normal" weight people, that person isn't harming them in any way.

Andrew,
It is not a socially acceptable to ask a fat person to not eat.....BECAUSE Eating food is a necessity of life. Just like breathing..... Smoking isn't. Smoking has no valid purpose what-so-ever. Whereas the consumption of food sustains lives.
Now your term "salad dodgers" implies that all fat people are the same and they all got that way for one reason and one reason only---for overindulging themselves. Like they are all gluttons..... Well, they're not.
Some of the same diseases and illnesses you mentioned cause weight gain! Like the diabetes.... heat disease....cancers.... And one that you didn't mention---Hypothyroidism---is the one of the worst. It screws up a person's metabolism and makes it quite easy to gain extra weight; and at the exact same time, makes it hard to lose weight by exercising. I have that disease and am suffering terribly as a result of it. It very well could and just might kill me one day. But that is my battle to contend with in this life.... Not yours. Not anyone elses....
But I guarantee you, that if anyone was stupid enough to walk up to me and tell me to stop eating while I was in a public place, I'd lay them out. I don't need to suffer being tormented on top of the health challenges I have already.
Nope.... Thank goodness it's not socially acceptable for people to behave like that. It's definitely one of those times when you really need to mind your own business and let others be.... I fail to understand why people think fatties are not entitled to the exact same rights as other human beings. The fat does not make us stop being humans.... and it doesn't make us feel any less either. Most of us have had to experience a lot of mean and hateful things over the years because someone who was blessed enough to not have a weight problem cannot resist the urge to mess with us. It's just sad.... plain sad....

It is not acceptable to use offensive language to anyone or show disrespect. I used to be a smoker and I lit up when other people were present. Smokers who do that are selfish not caring about the effects their smoke will have on the non smoker.

Do you honestly feel it concerns whether a substance is authorized or no longer? Whats up, they did make alcohol illegal as soon as on this country (prohibition ring a bell?). That didn't figure out too good. More commonly since persons kept ingesting, they simply started underground bars, and so on.. It's not relevant whether marijuana is authorized or now not, people will smoke it in any case. With that being mentioned, why does everyone care whether it is authorized or no longer?

No comment on overweight people except to say I suspect that being horribly overweight is actually worse on health than smoking, if the smoking is moderate.
As far as insults: Smokers apparently have no feelings or rights.

Because a smoker's second-hand smoke can affect the health of those around him. An obese person's obesity has no effect on the health of those around him.

Thyroid disease is one of the most common health problems we face today. From a practical standpoint, there are many ways to approach this issue. Learn here https://tr.im/vA4Aw
Hypothyroidism, or underactive thyroid, is a very common problem, and there are many reasons for this, including drinking chlorinated and fluoridated water, and eating brominated flour.
Chlorine, fluoride, and bromine are all in the same family as iodine, and can displace iodine in your thyroid gland.
Secondly, many people simply aren't getting enough iodine in their diet to begin with. The amount you get from iodized salt is just barely enough to prevent you from getting a goiter.

Do you surely imagine it concerns even if a substance is legal or not? hi, they did make alcohol unlawful once in this u . s . a . (prohibition strike a chord?). that did not paintings out too nicely. regularly because human beings saved ingesting, they basically all started underground bars, etc.. it would not count number number even if marijuana is legal or not, human beings will smoke it anyhow. With that being suggested, why does everybody care even if it is legal or not?

Ha ha! That's a good 'un. Can you imagine if it was acceptable for waiters to advise customers against fatty foods and stick to soup or salad?
Definately double standards.

Because smokers inflict smoke upon themselves and others. Fatties only inflict fat upon themselves.
Its unfair because one day I will give up smoking, probably replace the fags with food and become fat
