Depends on the situation and the person.

I know for a fact that I have to learn pretty much everything "the hard way" meaning I have to do it "wrong" before I can do it right.

Kinda sorta as when you know the bad you can more fully appreciate the good. Some times circumstances exist that you must rise above to aquire what it is to attain your goal.
