She has her laptop hooked up to a larger flat screen monitor so she can see the screen better...it is also going through a docking thing that the laptop sits on...the wallpaper shows up on the other screen but not the pointer or the icons...any advice?

Not sure, but you may want to try going into the display settings (right click on the desktop anywhere, which would require working with the laptops monitor), click on properties, then settings, then advanced, and see if changing the monitor setting to "monitor" instead of the laptop monitor would help. I don't know if her computer would show the same as mine does, but get into the display settings and see if there is something she can change from the default laptop monitor setting.
