I have never had the option. I don't think they want you to be numb when they insert it so that they know it is properly positioned. Don't worry, though. It really isn't as uncomfortable as you might think. Once you're used to it, you won't even know it's there.

Include this in your birth plan, but I would think they would wait till after the epidural since before then you are able to walk and go use the restroom. I've had a few surgeries and an epidural, all of the times they waited until I was out/numbed to insert the catheter.

When those contractions hit, you won't even notice a little catheter. I didn't even know I had one in untill it was all over, and I was only in labor for 3 hours! To be honest I had one years ago for a surgery, and it wasn't painful at all when they put it in. And I don't know about others, but I didn't get numb after the epidural. I could feel everything, just without pain. So if you're the same, it really won't matter if the catheter is before or after. Good luck and remember to be really nice to the nurses! I was super nice, and they gave me everything I wanted! Believe me, you want them to like you.

I had three c-sections and with all three they did not put my catheder in until I got my epidural.I recently had outpatient surgery and it was the same with that surgery. But,they did take the catherder out after the epidural wore off.I was scared this time because it had been eight years since my last one and I could hardly remember it,but actually it did not even hurt.Don't worry it will be fine.

I had a c-section and they put the catheter in after the epidural. It is your body insist on it if that is what you want. I don't see why they wouldnt do it.

There is nothing to be afraid of when they insert the catheter. You hardly feel it. Generally they insert it when you are either asleep or already have had the epidural.

I'm a partner of an expectant partner reading all the baby books!! I would suggest that you build this into your 'birthing plan' to ensure that the hospital sticks to your wishes. Good luck!!

What you have to do up front is nicely but firmly let them know that it is YOUR body. Realize that this is your birth experience and that they can't MAKE you do anything you don't want to...they may push you but don't give in...I would also make sure that my wishes were known to my doc in advance...like BEFORE you go to the hospital in labor.

Yes you can and if you ask they will most likely grant your request, but for any reason they need to cath you before and there is a medical reason then let them do it, it is not as babd as people say, deep breath in and you have it in the bag! :)
