Why, in words like X-mas or nicknames like X-Tina or X-Topher, is the X in place of the word Christ? Does that have any historical roots?

The X is a representation of the Greek letter "chi", the first letter of "Christos" which is Greek for "Christ".

There are a few reasons why people do that... most likely are these three.

1. It saves time by making those words shorter.
2. Many athiests or people who don't believe in christ use the X to de-christianize those words.
3. X is like a cross, relating to Christ

Well it's suppose to stand for cris as in cris-cross, but in my opinion the people who will be regretting for eternity started it.But you know what they say,"There's one born every minute".
