What I would do is some ball exercises, to promote core strength. Any sort of strengthening for the back as well as the core would help reduce back pain by strengthening the muscles in that area by providing it with extra support.
If you have the resources check out a local chiropractor. Find one through a referral, from a friend or family member. He/she would be able to help you more with your back and would be able to tell you exactly what exercises might help reduce pain in your back.
Check out these sites for some exercise ideas.

If you go and see a good chiropractor they should be able to provide you with instructions on how to do back stretches/exercises to reduce the pain, and would give advice on sports that are beneficial to the back. Back pain sucks, I feel for you : (

I agree with every ones answers above, as you did not specify what type of back problems you have, but what I find works for me is to do a few sit-ups every night. I started awhile back with 10 or 12, and have built up to 65 - 100 every night. I find if I do it close to bedtime, it helps me to sleep better and helps my lower back to not ache so much in the morning.
Keeping my abdominal muscles strong helps to keep my back strong. Always check with a Dr. before starting any kind of exercise.
Best of luck to you
