.EXE are Executible Files.
You download one from a trusted site then fine.
You download one from an unknown site or you receive an email from a stranger and you download it, you can expect a HELL LOT OF A TROUBLE!

pretty much file can lead to becoming infected even a picture or movie if the hacker chooses to exploit it and you dont patch yourself.

DUH! Yeah. But, as long as you don't mind having a little spyware, adware, trojans, worms, viri < ---latin here, etc., you should be ok. Oh, yeah, if not booting your computer at all is a problem, you should avoid downloading from any site that you don't know.
