My son is in first grade, and has to read and do worksheets every weeknight, besides fridays. I give him a couple minutes to use the bathroom, get a drink, or whatever else to settle him, then I have him read to me. I look over what he's got for homework tonight, then I make sure he understands it, and he does it. Granted, he may sit at the table for the next 3 hours with, say 5 sentences to write, but he has to do his homework before anything else, like games or playing outside.
Why? Because that's the way my mom was with me. I'm a horrible procrastinator, and if it didn't get done right away, it never got done. I suppose my son takes after me in that respect.
;o)
Edit: my son gets snack at school at the end of the day.

Snack and then homework. I find that if we wait there are just to many other things that they get distracted by -- friends, after school activities, t.v., something. If we just get it done things just go better. Besides, you never know when they will get a particularly difficult assignment that will just take hours. Also, there are times when my kids forget their book at school. If its right after school we can go back and get the book. If its later, the school is closed.
Go tell your parents thank you for caring enough to make sure you have the time to get your assignments done. 80)

I could never convince them that the best thing to do was to get it out of the way so that they could enjoy the evening doing what they wanted. I always did my homework the minute I got in the door.

No.
I don't force them to hit the books right away because we have after-school activites some days, and if no activity, then I believe kids need to unwind and burn off pent-up energy after being forced to behave all day at school.
I have 3 children, and the youngest one chooses to do her HW right away on most days because then she'll have the whole evening free to do what she wants. I do check up on them at dinner, and if I catch them playing games, I always ask "Is your HW done?" But for my kids (11, 14, and 16) I believe it is their responsibility to know what needs to be done and do it. Of course, when they were younger, I had to be more restrictive.

depends on the season and the weather. and their mood, if they seem tired and stressed from the day, i give them an hour or so before they start. i kinda feel sorry for them after being at school 7 hours then come home and do more school work. im sure it sucks

Mine have all finished school, but when they were young, to answer your question,no. I always thought they needed to unwind when they first got home from school, much like adults have a need to unwind after work. I think it worked for us, they seem to be educated and successful young adults

When my kids were school-aged, they usually did their homework after dinner. They need a little downtime after school, imo.

My children are grown now but, no...I did not. I felt they needed a snack and an hour or so break from acadamia. But then, yes, homework.

my 7 year old does it the minute he gets home, that way he can go out and play, my 12 year old does it when she gets home from whatever activity she has (gymnastics, dance, field hockey).
