I guess what you said really hurt your friend, even if you didn't intentionally mean to hurt her. The best thing you can do is give her a little time. Act normal, and be extra nice, to make sure she understands that you weren't trying to hurt her on purpose, or anything. She probably just needs some time to let her hurt or anger subside. It won't last too long, unless what you said was really mean and dumb. If her silence lasts too long, then really go up to her and sincerely apologize for what you said, and promise it won't happen again. Even if this is embarrassing for you, you should do it, because you don't want to lose this friendship, right? I'm sure it's fine though. Just give her some time to calm down. I hope everything works out between you and your friend! ^__^

Well, first off, WAS IT A MEAN DUMB JOKE?? if so, tell her you don't know what the hell you were thinking and you were just doing it to "fit in" and that you are extremely sorry.
To be honest, there is NO reason, EVER to make fun of anyone in a joking manner, unless you are an adult and that is the way you have ALWAYS been with your friends.
Maybe you should sit down and explain to her that you are sorry and let her talk and you listen!

Always remember...a joke is no longer a joke if it hurts or offends the other person. I don't care what the reason was, it is not worth loosing your friend over. Work it out!

Sounds like you need to be a Little more ernest with your apology. Give it a couple of days and go back to her alone and apologize again. Tell her it was stupid of you and don't do it again. Good luck.
