My son wants one and I'm not sure an 8 year old should have one. Has anyone had one here?

I know that that they are a type of lizard like an iguana but I thought they were different from them. My son loves repitles and he asked me tonight if I would get him one. I googled it and got some information but I wanted to know what they were like from someone who had owned one. And I'm a woman.

Thank you all for your help. I think I'll get him a Gecko to start out with. I love bearded dragons but I can't find them around here.

I have kept several though wonderful animals there are better choices for a first time reptile. I would try a leopard gecko or crested gecko, but they will still need your help and supervision.

I had a Chinese Water Dragon a few years ago (it died). I would not suggest one for your son's first reptile. They aren't very easy to take care of (especially for an 8-year-old), and you come into a lot of cost.
This site has some information on them:

If you do decide to get one for your son, I recommend doing all the research and having everything set up beforehand. I would also buy one from a breeder rather than a pet store. They tend to be much healthier from breeders. Not to mention, breeders have a lot more experience and can give you a lot more information than a pet store can...

I have not had a chinese water dragon. To tell youthe truth, I am not 100% sure what it looks like! If you son has grown up around animals, since he was 1 or 2, then yeah, go buy him one. But if he hasn't grown up around animals, then let him get usud to them, before geting him one. If you're still not comftorbale with it, then get him into one of those Adopt an Animal things at a close by zoo. He could "adopt" a chinese water dragon. He won't take it home, but he will become friends with it, and he will get to see it often.

I don't know much about chinese water dragons except the fact that I heard they can be a bit schizo and constantly try to get out of the tank and eventually get bruises and cuts on their snouts from banging the glass.
Can I suggest a bearded dragon instead? My son got one when he was 8 also and it has become his best friend. I was absolutely shocked at how amazingly docile and even affectionate they can be. My son comes home and runs to Ninja's (his bearded dragon) cage and gets Ninja out. He puts Ninja on his chest and does his homework and watches Tv with him on his chest. I have never regretted my decision to get him a bearded dragon even once and I have to tell you that we recently rescued a sick female who while I was nursing back to health I fell in love with and Samurai (Sammy) is now my girl.
I'm sure if you research bearded dragons you and your son will love them.

8 is a bit young for that type of lizard. It takes more experience. Try sticking with the geckoes for now, and promise him a water dragon when he’s older (like 12 with lots of experience.)
