The tough part is that this answer may change as you do. As you change, what you need in a friend will change. This means it's okay to have short-term friends and longer term friends.

A friend will always allow you to be an individual and not impose their will on you, or require that you lead them with your will.

Friendship and freedom go hand in hand; the minute you feel pressured - to conform, to give too much, to not be able to give the part of yourself you need to share, the ability to withhold the part of yourself you need to keep - then it's not a friendship, it's a power struggle.

Friendships can still be challenging - and they should be - because it takes energy (positive and some negative) in order to stretch and to grow.

A short term friend will stretch you, but not necessarily grow with you; it's okay, you may need the stretch. Just know when to let the distance accumulate.

A long term friend will stretch you, and also be their when you're both through stretching. Just remember, you're not twins, you don't have to do everything at the same rate.

Trust is the only essential. The minute that's not there - vamoose, or you'll learn to tolerate behavior that will make you a vulnerable human.

Good question.

A real friend is someone who:

a) it's okay to fart in front of.

b) you don't mind talking to on the bus for at least twenty minutes.

c) can borrow $5 and never has to pay it back

d) you'll actually call up do stuff.

e) doesn't screen your calls.

f) tries to stay in touch despite an infathomable distance between you and him/her.

g) doesn't approve of horrible role models such as Paris Hilton.

A good friend will bail you out of jail.

A best friend will be right there next to you saying, "Dude that was f*cking awesome!"

You can not pick your family members, but you can pick your friends. There are different types of friends, i.e. work friends, school friends, neighborhood friends, etc. but the best type of friend is the one you can call on any time of day when you need help, and he or she can count on you to do the same. There is mutual respect and you still like each other--faults and all.

I believe that a friend is someone that you can relay on to tell all of your secrets to, you can trust them with anything. They will always have your back and will help you with any type of problem that you have wheather its with other friends, boyfriends, family, what ever.

Someone who gives of themselves and expects nothing in return. Someone who thinks of your needs before his/her own.
Someone who likes you "just as you are".
Somewho who tells you the truth when you need to hear it but always in a tactful way.
Someone who sees that best in you and encourages you to be the best you can be.
Somone who is there when you need them the most.

a friend is someone who is always there for you no matter what. they are never afraid to tell you your wrong or anything about themselves. a friend is someone you can completely trust, someone who will never betray you. never turn you back on a real friend because they would never do that to you.
