Stamps are not necessarily valuable just because they are old. I can buy any number of common 19th Century stamps for a nickel each. Some are valuable, of course. The best explanation I know of about how to estimate the value of your stamps and how to sell them in found at http://www.virtualstampclub.com/inherit - please take a look at it, as it would take a lot of space here to repeat all that information. This is a site run by stamp collectors, not a commercial site.

universal stamps are only nice. you do not choose fancy ones. besides the undeniable fact that, do take an entire "pattern" to the submit workplace (tackle, all enclosures, etc.) and performance it WEIGHED to confirm what right postage you'll choose. you could't have self assurance it, yet an common "better" paper (i.e, map?) might want to placed you into yet another type of weight (extra postage) so get it weighed only to be on the secure part so that you recognize the precise postage. sure, there have been some invites that come back to the bride/groom with "inadequate postage" stamps throughout them! Yikes!

Old and rare stamps can be worth quite a lot.
Look up the Stanley Gibson catalogue --- probably available at your local library.

Good luck!
