It removes dirt particles from the air that your engine needs to run. Gas engines use about 16 parts air to one part fuel. If dirt is not removed, it can clog small holes in the injectors and starve the engine for fuel. Dirt can also destroy the piston rings that seal the pistons against the cylinder walls or worse scour the cylinders walls. It is important to check for clean filters in your car to keep it running properly and safely

The other answers are correct about air cleaners holding the air filter so that only clean air enters the engine. The humble air cleaner is actually a well-engineered and essential part of any power plant. Below is a list of other functions the air cleaner serves:
1. Silencing the hissing created by the air rushing into the intake manifold.
2. In case of a backfire (combustion coming out the intake manifold instead of going out the exhaust), the fire is contained by the air cleaner.
3. In some cars, it regulates the temperature of incoming air.
4. Supplies clean air and vacuum for other engine functions.
5. Shields the air filter from damage and unnecessary dirt.
Good luck on your essay!

It keeps junk from getting in to your carburetor. By it being clean your car runs better, better gas millage & more horse power. U should keep it clean or it's sorta like putting a plastic bag over your head, U will suffocate. It does the same thing to Ur car. U and brush or vaccuum them clean. U do need to or at least should replace them once ever 18 months. U can also buy a life time filter that you clean with gas. They cost more but if Ur going to keep the car it's worth it. Hope this helped U.

dirt is the #1 enemy of an internal combustion engine, right up there with heat and friction. there are several filters on an engine, air, oil and fuel. a few even have crankcase breather filters. the air filter filters out approx 98% of all airborne dirt particles, so the incoming air charge is as free of dirt particles as can be. pistons, rings, cylinder walls and even valve seats work best and longer with clean air.
