most pet stores carry small (for under 10 gallons of water) submersible water heaters. Walmart has them for under $10. For those, just fill the area with enough water to complete cover the heater and you are all set. They are pre programmed to keep the water at a safe temperature. There are also heaters that look like stickers, with heat tubes inside. They can be put on the bottom of the tank to radiate above and heat the enviroment. They can be kinda expensive. You can get them in the specialty catalogs for pets like Foster and Smith. They average about $20-$30. Another option is to place them near a heat source, such as a vent or radiator. You have to watch to make sure the water stays full, though. The submersible heater would probably be your best bet. Also buy a water thermometer to make sure you are keeping it a safe and healthy temp for the breed for the breed of the turtle. Give them enough dry land in there, too. That way, if the water does reach a cooler temp then they like, they will come out. The do make some heating rocks, too, but I am not sure that I would put something like that near water. (electric cord) I hope this helps and good luck!! I ALSO AGREE WITH THE PERSON ABOUT THE HEAT LAMP. JUST MAKE SURE YOU GET THE RIGHT KIND OF BULB AND GIVE THEM SOME SHADE, TOO. TOO MUCH SUN CAN BURN THERE SKIN AND DRY OUT THERE BODIES.

You can get a lamp heater from your local petstore...it will look like a metal lamp but the bulbs will be different since they will need to heat your turtles. I had a ceramic heater for my iguana but i don't think id recommend that esp since it'll get wet. Also, maybe moss or something soft they can lay on under the lamp shade and water nearby when they get too warm. At night, cover part of the tank with a towel to keep the heat in. I hope this helps, good luck!

I'd bet we are talking about Red-ear sliders, huh?

Red-ears are mostly a warm-loving species so aim for 75-80F and the bigger the tank the better. 10 gallons of water per inch of turtle is generally recommended- and actually, bigger tanks are easier to manage.

A good quality in-tank heater that is thermostatically controlled is the best bet in the long run. Set it to do about 70F all the time and use a basking heat lamp to warm up the basking site to 90F during the day.

You didn't say if the turtles are inside or outside or if they are native to your area.
If they are inside, normal room temperature is fine for them. They are use to warm days and cool nights in the wild. If they are outside and you have close to or below freezing temperatures you will need to either bring them inside or encourage them to hibernate. They will naturally try to hibernate when the temperatures start cooling off more at night. When this happens, you can place them in a wooden box with leaves and stuff and store them in a cool place for the winter. Somewheres like a cold storage room where they will not freeze. Once it starts warming up, bring them out during the day and back in at night until the temperatures stay above freezing.

Make sure they stay 'warm enough' for their 'breed' of turtle and make sure they always have fresh food and water. Some people put them into aquariums with special heaters, but if you're in a hurry, you can just set a heating pad on top of their cage and turn it to a relatively high temp and that will radiate heat down to them.

Knit some tiny little cashmere sweaters for them. Better make them turtle neck sweaters

Get a heater light, or just a plain old desk lamp, that's what I do for mine
