sounds like you are talking about a gas in a closed container...

a liquid would not fill the whole container so the top would be empty...

a solid would be just in the one spot (example a marble in a 1 gallon jug).. so it would not be evenly spread either...

But, there ARE circumstances where a gas will not be spread evenly throughout a space too.. if the gas is VERY HEAVY and the space is very tall.. then the gas will settle to the bottom.
