it will be uncomfortable, but it won't hurt. nothing to be afraid of. doubt if they will let you have a friend in the room. you will be covered up. it will be over in just a few minutes, it doesn't take long at all.

I've never had one, but my parents both have had them at least twice. They told me they were good and doped up on Valium and other stuff, so they barely remembered the procedure. I would say you'd have to bring someone with you, as you will not be able to drive yourself home (because of the sedatives). They might let you have someone in the room with you. I am told they keep you pretty much covered up except for the parts they have to access.

If you're really freaked out, tell your doctor now, and ask them for some Valium or something to take before you go. It's not worth it to just 'suffer through' and be brave. If it scares you, that is what the drugs are for. :) Good luck!

Rectal scope? If you are referring to a colonoscopy or flex Sig. then I have had one and I am due for a repeat colonoscopy on the 9th of Feb. It does not hurt, and you will be asleep. They give you what is called twilight sleep with a mixture of drugs. They then fill your colon with CO2, so they can get a better image, and then do the exam. Most likely they will not allow someone back in the procedure area with you, because you will be asleep. They will be allowed back into the recovery area when you awake. Everything will be fine, and the worst part is the prep. My colonoscopy saved my life, so do not fear them. Good luck with yours, and good luck with mine!

Usually you will be pre-medicated with something along the lines of Versed. It is a temporary amnesia inducing drug. Be careful you may say things you dont want said and you will not remember saying them !! You will be in a johnny laying on your side. If you are really good you can even see pictures when it is all over.

Naked except for the paper gown you will lay on your left side and they will grease up the scope and slide it in. You will most likely have a local which will numb you. My colonoscopy I was put to sleep and never even knew what went on.

No it will not hurt.

You will be laying on your side.

Yes you will be partially covered.

And yes ask first but in most instances you can bring a friend for moral support.

By the way the device is called a Proctoscope!

Thanks, RR

I'm fairly certain that you're unconscious through the scope so you shouldn't experience any pain.

Don't be scared, medical procedures are rarely more than mildly uncomfortable.

They give you meds, you can ask your doctor to put you out but you need to ask your doctor ahead of time so the person doing it gets the order.
