its cuz it needs some space to hold all of the data, the i pod 30gigs only hole 27gigs and also that round to the nearist number cuz thay are not going to say this mp3 holds 347.331 songs.
one other thing is that your "songs" may be longer that what a normal song is.

It is because the other songs must not be actual mp3s. Players on the computer, can figure out the code type, even if the extention name is mp3 or wma, so you can change the name and still play the file. But the mp3 player you have may not accept wma or other formats that have been renamed or are not the real mp3 format.

ok so the guy above told u why its like that but he didnt tel u how to fix it...thats y Im here..ok so heres what u do: (this is prolly the illegal way but ima show u anyway because i dun want u to lose ur songs) u go into my computer...click on ur mp3 (f:)...it should have a bunch of folders like photos, music, and sum folder called System (or smthn like that)....if u DONT c this folder then its hidden (so heres how u "unhide" that folder::. Open "My Computer".
2. On the upper left part of your computer, please select "Tools", then at the pull-out menu select "Folder Option".
3. Click on the "View" tab the click on the "Show all hidden files and folders" category.)
ok so like i was saying...open the systems folder...there should b 6 more folders in there...open up the music folder...this will have ALL UR SONGS including the 100 u cant c...take them and copy them to a folder on ur desktop or sumwhere...then ur gonna format ur player...u know take off all ur songs from it...completely erase it...but dont worry because u already have ur songs on ur harddrive...so heres how u format it:go to “My Computer”, single right click on the “Removable Disk” associated with your mp3 player, and select “Format”. .. ok now uve managed to delete all ur songs. so then u take all the songs uve saved into that folder and put them in to ur mp3 player like u normally would...it should work...it worked for me, if u dont mind me asking..what kinda mp3 player do u have?

nuke is right....mp3 players aren't the same as things like window media player...all songs have to be mp3 in order to work.

you should hook up your mp3 to your computer and then go to my computer and click on removable disc e and wipe everything in there and that should free up all the space on your mp3
