He was partly famous for all the reasons you just gave. People are fascinated by people who do outrageous things. But i believe he was mostly famous for revolutionizing country music. No one sounded like him at the time, nor does anyone sound like him now. His influence is found in any southern rock band of any substance and even blues-influenced rock. You may not enjoy his music(and you'd be in the distinct minority)but don't say the man wasn't talented

When Was Johnny Cash Popular

2016-11-04 23:28:45 · answer #2 · answered by ? 4 · 0 0

That is just it. Johnny Cash was a real man. People in general struggle with things in life. Cash did the same and over came most if not all of his problems in life. He got saved and freed himself of the drugs and drinking. He found the love of his life and stuck with her until death. (granted after a failed marriage.)

Johnny Cash did what he wanted to do.
He wrote and played music that fit him. He did not come to the audience like most if not all other musicians do. He did his thing.

This is just how I see it anyways. I cannot stand any kind of country. And when I hear one of his songs, when the music starts up, I'm about ready to turn off the song. But then when I hear that deep baritone I can hear a man whom struggles and or struggles. A man with something to say. A man with a story to tell. A man worth a listen. That to me is the most important thing in music.

Above all else. The man was REAL.

Johnny Cash was a darn good singer. He was a good man. Why do you think you can ask that. What are you perfect one of those holyer than me people. Man. If you base the usage of alcohol and drugs and good singing on talent. Then almost all the new singers would be out. Johnny Cash was a good singer and straightend up. Everyone makes mistakes man whats the deal with you are you perfect or something.

Think about two things. You don't have to look at a performer to listen to a recording. The nature of the songs speak to a person's experiences even if the singer is not the best. By the way, there is a difference between singing and performing and entertaining. You might not like his singing, but you cannot deny that he was an entertainer. His popularity is proof of that.
It is rare that a person knows anything about a performer's personal life. At least it used to be so. In such cases, all you did was enjoy being entertained. You didn't think about the entertainer much outside of that realm.

Marginal talent. What the *?! The guy was revolutionary and celebrated country for what it truly is, not the *# the industry made it out to be in the 70s. I hate country, yet love Cash because his lyrics were from the heart, and he brought something real to country that is more in line with what the music of today is supposed to be about. Any great artist, chances are, are going to be a real son of a *, nobody said that other "great" artists were great people either. Most great artists, people love the music, yet loathe and despise their personal lives.

Stop hating on Cash, he had a crossover appeal that went beyond mere overproduction and pop culture aspirations. Sit down and actually read the lyrics to his songs; they actually hold up over time without the slick videos and remakes that he had digressed towards in the 90s, though such served as great promotional material for his work.

Polka is being kept alive in some parts of the world. It's just not very popular in the US (unless you listen to "Weird Al" Yankovic). Lots of genres have fallen from the mainstream, but are still going, just not as well. Grunge acts are still being formed people. But let's not forget that genres evolve into something else over time. Grunge went on to become Post-Grunge which is actually quite popular currently. Although it's not pure Grunge, it's basically a more "Radio Friendly" derivative. Ska Punk, according to many, is dead. But it's not. It's still alive and well, it's just not on the radio nearly as often. Ska Punk has actually started resurfacing in recent years. And you know what band has truly kept it alive? Reel Big Fish. They never quit even though so many others did (i.e. Mustard Plug, Smash Mouth, Goldfinger, Less Than Jake, No Doubt, etc.). Reggae/Ska went on to become Dancehall and Dubstep which went on to become Hip-Hop which went on to become Rap. Hardcore Punk and Horror Punk merged to become Melodic Hardcore which merged with Post-Grunge and Pop Punk and became Emo which merged with Crossover Thrash and became Post-Hardcore. Jazz is still big. Jazz Fusion acts like the Dave Matthews Band keep it alive. Classical is not listened to as often or widely, but since it is truly no longer in existence, classical is dead. However, film score and instrumental music is still going on and has the same idea that Classical started with. So much music is still alive. Music doesn't die. It just fades from our vision if we let the media tell us what to listen to. I can suggest plenty of acts that are not in the mainstream, but are still amazing. BQ: Rock: Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap - AC/DC Metal: Holy Wood (In the Shadow of the Valley of Death) - Marilyn Manson Ska: Our Live Album is Better Than Your Live Album - Reel Big Fish Punk: Nevermind - Nirvana Country: Johnny Cash Greatest Hits - Johnny Cash Jazz: Traveling Without Moving - Jamiroquai Hip-Hop: This Gigantic Robot Kills - MC Lars Classical: Smart Symphonies (I've had it since I was a little baby)

I've asked the same thing about Elvis. Johnny Cash is more popular now than he was when he was alive. He's even popular with the teens. The same thing happened with Kurt Cobain. I hated Nirvana but my teen loves the music.
