According to Shanks & Witherington ("The Brother of Jesus", 2003), at the time of Jesus' birth the most common name for a boy was Simon/Simeon. Joseph was the second most common, Jesus the sixth, and James/Jacob the twelfth. Which explains why those names show up a lot in the Bible!
