I'm looking to clean my carpets and have been checking out the brands in my local stores. Does anyone have experience with these? Any favorite machines?

unfortunately none of the major brands are any good any more. Most fall apart after about a year of use, i work at a vacuum shop that is a bissell repair center but i also fix all of the other makes and models. If you really need to have one in the home the best thing would be to by the least expensive Hoover steam vac, model F5810 its a little more work when you clean but its the most durable (less stuff to go wrong). Also using a good pretreat spray before cleaning will really help if you can find it the lindhaus brand vacuum pretreat is alcohol based and works pretty well.

Ah...i just rented a rug doctor and i love the resuts!

It was about $12 for 4 hours and i had to buy the products. I cleaned 3 upstairs rooms and 2 sofas.

Let me tell you...this was a project!! I do not think i would do it again unless i was HIGHLY motivated...which you might me...i dont know!

There was a lot of walking up and down the stairs to dump and fill the tank over and over...about 3 times per room (very dirty carpet).

Hiring someone isnt too much more and they will do a REALLy good job!

Steam cleaning the carpet is MUCH MUCH better than the spray foams and vacuum up cleaners...these leave a residue on your carpet and make it worse...trust me!!

I have a Bissel model and it does work. The water tank is a lot smaller than you'd find on a commercial machine, and the motor is very noisy. But on the plus side it's easier to maneuver. Home shampooers are excellent for maintenance: spills and high traffic areas. If you were going to do an entire room, I think a rental would be the way to go.

yes they are good. You just have to be careful of how uch soap you put in the carpet. If you put too much in the carpet will get dirt much quicker.
