The Deer Hunter
We were soldiers
Platoon
--------------------------

I would say that those three movies are the best non-documentary movies about the Vietnam war. If you want to get reviews of them, go to www.imdb.com

Briefly: The Deer Hunter tracks a group of friends before they go to the war, and follows them through the war.

Platoon is more of a look at the horrors of war, as seen through one young soldier's perspective.

We were soldiers: This movie is based on a book "we were soldiers, and young" and is A TRUE story. It is a fascinating story of one particular battle. Get the book if possible, too.

I edited this out:

Apocalypse now is an interesting movie, set during the war...but not ABOUT the war. It is about a secret mission that occured during the war based on the book 'Heart of Darkness."

I would also recommend getting ANY and all documentaries about the war as well.

Apocolypse now-because it's an exploration into the psychological effects of an extended conflict in a foreign country..when the common soldier doesn't even understand why (or whom) we are fighting.

Full Metal Jacket- from a marine's point of view. Scarily accurate, according to the vets I know

THE DEER HUNTER_- It shows what happens to a soldier before and after the war, as well as those at home.. it also sheds light on the pschological effects

The green berets isn't worth a view...it was intended as a "feel good" recruitment campaign, plain and simple. it was PURELY propaganda. yuck.

"Dogfight" --it's a movie about a guy who's about to go to Vietnam. River Phoenix and Lili Taylor are in it. It's a quiet and wonderful little movie.
