Not sure about most of these answers mate. Ive come across this situation before.
The derv will settle at the bottom of your fuel tank, a good garage wouldn't drop the tank, there is no need, the water could be pumped out from under the bonnet at the filter or injection pump until the diesel starts running from the pipe work, then a new filter fitted, the injection pump bled up and away you go. I would then brim the fuel tank and change the filter again after youve nearly emptied this tank of fuel.

Not a good move but you really need to get this drained ASAP as it will cause rusting within the diesel system quite quickly

Once drained the garage will probably flust it through with a bit of kero and then fresh fuel

If you are very lucky and have not left this contaminated fuel in for days on end no damage will have happened and all will be fine. That said nothing can be checked until it is fully drained and then run up

drain tank and clean, flush out pipe work and replace fuel filter, fill with diesel and loosen injector pipes from common rail prime system by cranking engine over and any water trapped will run out open pipes, when your sure diesel is coming through from common rail tighten pipes and crank engine, you may be surprised. Be careful with pipework from common rail as they don't like contaminates at all, the high pressure pumps and injectors don't like foreign matter, people may read this and say NO WAY but YES WAY, I work for a main dealer and we service/repair local farm workers/land owners 4X4's who do the same thing with containers and they are common rail/high pressure systems and we have had no problems, 1 did need a pump and injectors but the driver did admit to towing and trying to start the car on water which meant the pump and injectors were not being lubed and cooled by diesel.
You may have also hydraulic'd the engine too
Good Luck

Only very little amount of water can dissolve in diesel. Since water is heavier than diesel, you will find water at the bottom of the tank and you can suck it up. In some Audi models there is a plug at the bottom of the tank. If your model has the plug the luck is on your side. Do not forget to clean the separation filter that might be full of water at this time.

If you have a drain plug on you petrol tank, unscrew it and let the fuel run into a large bowl. You fill find that the petrol floats on the top of the water. So carefully pour off the fuel then throw away the water. That is how I fixed my car when I was caught in the rain without a petrol cap.I had stuffed some rag in the filler, but didn't realise that in the rain it acted like a wick and I had about 3 gallons of water in my tank.

We have put unleaded into our Audi twice now...me first, then my husband some months later. When I did it I realised what I had done and didn't start the car, the second time Graham filled the tank while I paid....we got around two miles before the car packed up. Both times we called Green Flag and they took the car to their depot where the tank was drained, the engine flushed out and the filters changed. damned expensive but at least there was no damage caused to the engine. You need to get your car to a garage to have it seen to I'm afraid.

first off. your car is audi, pretty pricy. second, putting water in ur tank, then driving it, u basically killed your engine. if you put water in there and did not start your car, then it would have cost you less and repairing it would be easier. but since you started your car, you allowed water to be sprayed out to your fuel injection, where your spark plugs will not ignite water. if you are lucky, to get your car fixed and clean from water may cost you about 650-700 american. or you may have to replace ur fuel lines, gas tank, and worst comes to worst, you may need a new engine. good luck man.

You might as well call someone to come and get it. The fuel tank will need to be dropped and cleaned out. The whole fuel system will need to be blown out and the injectors will more than likely have to be removed and cleaned or replaced. It's not going to be cheap.
