You could write about a Veteran that you may know if you do not know one call an American legion hall or another Veterans group. Many Veterans have a story to tell one may have been in a war while another may not but they all have a story and most people can relate to a Veteran.
Thanks and Good luck.

Pick a topic that other people can relate too.

I think a great topic is about how people react when they see acts of injustice. And base it on a level as to where their values/morals hold them.

Always always always people ask themselves what they consider to be right and wrong.
Look at yourself for example, when you see something wrong occuring, do you step up and stop it, or do you stay silent and watch it occur. A lot of people will SAY they would do the first but in reality when it comes to it they'll actually do the second.

It;s a difficult topic but I think you can pull a great plot out of it, something that everyone can ask themselves.

Like, take one story and pull out say... 3 characters and allow them to develop so they all react to that same situation 3 different ways.

It'll blow your english teachers mind if that's who it's for.

Why don't you write a story about a family affect by a natural disaster like Katrina. Or about a family and their fight to avoid the flooding that is going to happen from global warming. You could write about a family who is struggling to adjust to having a wounded soldier home from Iraq. Or a year in the life an Army wife left home to take care of things while her husband is gone off to war.

If you write about what you know I think your story will have the greatest possibility of resonating with people. If you write about situations that have meaning to you, rather than what you think other people will want to read, you will be more able to infuse your writing with FEELING, and the reader - regardless of whether he or she is similar in circumstance to your characters, will be more likely to identify with the EMOTIONS in the story...it is the EMOTIONS in stories that we identify with, not whether or not a character plays tennis, and "hey, I play tennis, too! This is the best story ever!" (for example)...

Write what you know and put your feelings into the characters!

Good luck and have fun....
