There are many different categories here. What are you looking for? Something really musky? How old are you? Going to a retail counter and trying different things is annoying and usually painful to the senses, but you can learn a lot. The #1 best selling high-end fragrance for men right now (last I checked) is Aqua Di Gio by Giorgio Armani. I prefer the scent of his Armani Mania over it though. When you do find a scent you like, it will usually come in a "gift set" option as well. It's SOOO cost-effective to go this way! You can use less of the 'cologne' when you use the shower gel (PLEASE don't use more than 2 sprays of ANYTHING, and if it comes in aerosol, put it down and walk away. Now.) and it helps with the ever-tricky art of "layering scents." ...sometimes you've got a really great smelling cologne, but your aftershave or deodorant or shampoo or body wash is effing it up on you - be careful of that! Redken For Men (available at salons - even the Wal*Mart salons) got together with Armani to scent their shampoos and other hair-care products, making them meld with all of Armani's scents BEAUTIFULLY!
I hope this was all informative, if nothing else. Remember, stay away from aerosols! If you're putting that much on, no one will get close to you - we can already smell you before we open the door, making it easier to run away! Get a scent that smells great and you use sparingly, so we want to snuggle in closer to you to smell more of it!!

ANYTHING by Armani.
My friend Anna wears Armani Code (a men's cologne) because it smells SO good, even though she's a girl it's okay.
Plus, it smells different than other men's colognes, and that isn't easy.
NEVER ever ever go with a body spray, like Axe or tag. Eew. It's impossible not to put on too much, and it makes me and all my Friends gag.

I find that most mens cologne smells similar...or it smells like an 8th grader.
My favorite mens cologne is GIVENCHEY. It is a really "dark" smelling cologne. Different than anything!! It is very sexy!!
