The koala is not a bear and is not related to bears. It is a marsupial while all bears are placental mammals. The koala's closest relatives are the wombats.
Some years ago, koalas were introduced to Kangaroo Island off the coast from Adelaide. Without predators they have increased to about 30,000 - which is at least 20,000 too many. Koalas are territorial and just about all koala territory on the mainland has koalas. This means that the excess koalas on the island cannot be resettled elswhere. There is going to be a mass cull of the animals on the island in the very near future. It is unfortunate but if you don't want all 30,000 dying of hunger, two thirds of them have got to go.
I would imagine there will be huge international protests but if you can suggest what can be done with 20,000 koalas that cannot stay where they are, I am sure the Government of South Australia would be pleased to hear from you.

Although in the minds of many people, the koala is nothing more than a cute, cuddly teddy bear, it is in reality quite different than what they think.

They are marsupials (a mammal that has a pouch). They are very territorial, and vicious especially during mating season. You wouldnt go into the bush and try to cuddle them, they have very sharp claws. On each hand they have three fingers and two thumbs.
